Ask Sophie: Where do you get your ideas?

This is one of those questions I get all allllllll the time, and I’m excited to give you an answer, but... There is no one set place I get my ideas! They come from all over, from magazines to books, to TV shows, to a billboard I might see, or a product I may come upon in a store.

I also don’t always come up with these ideas myself. In fact, usually my best ideas come from children. Whether it’s at a party or a library event, kids create the most amazing things using materials I’ve supplied, and they’re truly inspiring. They also often challenge me to make something using a specific item or theme!

I also have an ever-growing, extensive library of books and magazines that I resource on a daily basis. American Girl and Family Fun Magazine are two of my very favorite publications. Both are chock full of game and crafting ideas that spark my own imagination and creativity. The photos are great, the descriptions concise, and the subject matter is always timely and inclusive of the hot trends of the moment.

And of course, I also use the internet to glean a great many visual ideas (like Pinterest, for example!). What I love about the world we live in now is that there is so much knowledge at our fingertips! The web is such a creative place -- it’s a far cry from good ol’ “Highlights” magazine (which was the first publication that ever caused me to actually get creative!).
